A RESIN IMPREGNATOR

A volunteer fiberglassing crew learns a lot in a layup session.  The first thing most of them learn is not to volunteer again! Spreading 5 or 10 gallons evenly over 800 square feet of fiberglass is a lot more work than laying it on and smoothing it out.

There are machines that impregnate resin into the glass.   They use precision machined rollers to press the resin into the glass.  Binks makes some ranging in price from $5,000 to $15,000. Not exactly the range for a backyard boat builder.

PictureMy imaginative designer, John Fox, unknowingly came to the rescue.  Working with a South African client John developed a simple single roller impregnator that works by capillary action..

When John came back to the US, he posted a picture to his web site and I  grabbed the idea and built my own version.  It took about 3 evenings to cut up some square steel tubing left over from building the boat shed and weld it toghther.  The roller is a piece of 8" Schedule 40 ABS sewer pipe.  I'm waiting for a sheet metal shop to deliver the resin pan so I have not had a chance to try it yet,
